about us

Step inside and you won’t find a hushed, white walled room where you feel like you shouldn’t ask a price. You’ll find three floors of paintings, sculpture, glass and clay, hung the way you might hang them at home, and someone genuinely glad you stopped in.

That’s not a design choice. For years, this building has our home : the gallery downstairs, the family upstairs, the art never more than a room away. Fine Art For Everyone isn’t a slogan we came up with. It’s the way we’ve always lived.

In 1993, Pam Bundy moved home from Raleigh and opened a small folk art and animation gallery in the basement of this building. Her mother’s consignment shop filled the main floor above, and Pam lived in the back room.

Mike McKay was managing hotels at the time. Not long after the doors opened, he left that career to help, picking up shifts at the consignment shop and eventually opening a custom frame shop of his own. They married in 1994.

As the gallery grew, so did the family. The consignment shop consolidated into the Hardin Fine Jewelry next door, Pam and Mike expanded onto the main floor, and the McKays moved in upstairs. Their first son, Morgan, was born in 1998 at the old Cannon Memorial Hospital, a couple hundred yards away. As the story goes, Pam walked home, because Mike had clients in the gallery and couldn’t leave. That tells you a good deal about the early years.

By the time their second son, Mason, arrived in 2001, Pam was studying interior design and had joined Dianne Davant & Associates, where she has worked ever since and is now a part owner. That eye for how art lives in a room shapes every wall here.

Morgan and Mason Grew up in this building, and a few years ago both came home to learn the family trade. Today the gallery fills all three floors, and the next chapter is already underway through Cellar Studios and aesthete.

More than thirty years later, we’re still at 920 Shawneehaw Avenue, still in the same building, and still glad you stopped in.
